CHOIR HAS NEW MUSICAL DIRECTOR

After the Christmas Concert in December, 2008, the choir’s Musical Director for six years, Brian Howard, retired and handed over the reins of leading the musical team to Karl Daymond AGSM.

Karl studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, and at the National Opera Studio, sponsored by Glyndebourne Festival Opera. He has enjoyed a twenty-year career as a principal operatic baritone, appearing with all the major British opera companies and in many opera houses throughout Europe and in the USA. At the present time Karl devotes his time to performing and directing with his own company, Operaplayhouse which he runs with colleague, mezzo soprano, Pippa Longworth.

Notable performances have included performances for English National Opera, including The Pirate King (Pirates of Penzance), a role also performed at the Royal Variety Performance, 2004. In addition he has sung many principal baritone roles for the Welsh National Opera; Opera North and performances at The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and has also sung for an audience of 70,000 people at Old Trafford!

As well as strictly operatic roles, Karl has sung with many leading orchestras, among them, The Berlin Philharmonic (with Sir Simon Rattle); The Royal Philharmonic; the London Sinfonia; BBC Concert Orchestra etc. and has made many appearances at the BBC Promenade Concerts and on BBC TV and radio. Additionally he has starred in two opera films for BBC TV, one of which won both The Gramophone and Vienna TV awards and gained a Grammy nomination.

Karl regularly performs his own show, “Lowering the Tone” which includes songs by Noel Coward; G & S; Lehrer; Flanders and Swann etc., and has hosted his radio programme for BBC Radio Wales, “Music Makers”
